Cruise Ship to Airport in Rome

We are taking our 1st trip to Europe this spring. Our cruise ship over lands near Rome at Civitavecchia. We have arranged to pick up our long term rental car at Rome's airport. Does anyone have any idea how to get from the ship to the airport in the cheapest manner? We will have all of our luggage with us too.

There is a train that goes from the port right into Rome and from that train station you can catch a bus to the airport. It was very reasonably priced and pretty easy. I was traveling with another woman and we felt perfetly safe and didn't have any problems.

Have a great trip!

This quesiton is asked with some frequency. I would really be curious as to which "Bus" service provides a connection between the Civitavecchia docks and Rome FCO. I see at least 4 companies that provide the service but they are limo-type services with minivans costing 120Euro and up for 3 passengers. The cost goes up for additional passengers. I can provide those names if anybody needs them but I was looking for a bus like SITA or Marozzi for less cost.

I am sure there is a bus going to the airport from Termini and it is probably the cheapest but most travelers going to the airport use the Leonard Express (train) to the airport. The big question is how much luggage will you have. You will need to get to the train station in Civitavacchia and that is about a mile from the port entrance. Mostly likely you will have to walk to the station so you need to be able to easily handle your luggage.

I managed to find train schedules to and from the airport to Civitavecchia, but couldn't determine the price! Anyone help out? The cruise line charges US$85/person.

My understanding (and it is a bit shaky) is that there are a few trains to a station NEAR the airport but then you have to get from there to the airport terminal -- I am assuming via cab. I think most people take the train into Rome (about 5 Euro depending on class of ticket and train) and then take the Leonardo Express to the airport terminal. That price is currently 11 E. That trip would take in the range of two to three hours depending on waiting time for trains and tickets. Trip per person would be about 25 US$. That is the route we have always used for four trips.

Ah yes, but what is a 'reasonable' price and what year did you pay it?

We were there mid June last year and that is what we paid then. Not sure I understand you last question.

Betsy, as with all cruise lines they should provide transport from the port to the airport for a minimal fee. You can either request it ahead of time or book it once on board ship. All cruise lines offer this and its very reasonable.

Rome has more than one airport. Make sure you are going to the right one (probably FCU but be sure).

Pete, how many cruises are you been on? I have never seen a cruise line offer a transfer that was reasonable (IMO). Kathleen indicated that her cruise ship wanted 85 US$ for the transfer. Hardily reasonable by any standard. Cruise line offer super convenience for transfers but you pay a high price for that service and convenience. For those who think it is worth it, it is great. But you can do it a lot cheaper which was the original question.
