Cruise home from Rome

Help, please. We are just too old now to endure that long flight home from Italy. This was the first year we had to take connecting flights, and it was even worse than non stop. I've checked repositioning cruises from Civitavecchia & Genoa, but they leave in late Oct. to early Nov. We have been in Italy in September, in awful rain & fog. Is October the same, but colder, or does the sun return? Thank you.

What is the question?? Weather is random. We have been in Italy a couple of times in October and the weather was terrific. October is a favorite month to travel but it does rain now and then.

Helen, my wife and I have crossed to europe by ship several times the last few years. Our opinion? ... if you have the time, even the worst shipboard cabin is better than 1st class on an airplane. We returned from Southampton in May on the QM2 and are scheduled to returtn from Barcelona on RCCL's Liberty of the Seas on Oct 27 in 2012. The Fall repositioning cruises generally happen early October through mid November. Another option ... Cunard's QM2 makes the crossing multiple times during the year between NYC and Southampton.

My favorite time of year in Italy is mid-October. Yes it can rain but it rains pretty much anywhere in Europe in the Fall (ditto the U.S.) We've started taking repositioning cruises either to or from because a) we have the time and b) on Celebrity at least the lectures are really really interesting, nightly jazz music is great and c) we use it as a two week spa. I actually lose weight on the cruise which is good because when I get to Italy and anything with truffles will be on my plate! Have also been to Italy in November. Nippy with bright sunshine. Weather is really the luck of the draw.

We were in Rome. Florence, Siena this October and it was above average temperatures. Rome on Oct. 1st was in the mid-80's. Don't know how that helps you as the weather does change from year to year.
