Crossing the france switzerland boarder near geneva

I am staying in geneva for 4 days however I have found the hotels a little expensive. I was wondering if I could stay just outside of switzerland in france and cross the boarder every day.

Is this easy to do?
Can I walk across?
Do any busses/taxis cross the boarder?

I was thinking of staying in annemasse.

I did this years ago when I had relatives who worked in Geneva and lived in Ferney-Voltaire just over the border. I stayed with them so cannot help you with accomodation. The buses do cross the border, and you can pay for your fare in Swiss francs. You must bring your passport but in my multiple border crossings my passport was never checked. The trip from Ferney to Geneva was only about 20 minutes from memory. I am not familiar with Annemasse, but I imagine the transport arrangements are similar.

As of Dec. 2008 Switzerland became a member of the Schengen zone meaning that there are no longer any formal border restrictions. No different from crossing from BC to Alberta.

Jeff, Switzerland is a member of the Schengen Agreement, but not of the European Taxation and Customs Union.

Custom checks for riders of public transport or pedestrians may be rare, but the comparison with BC and Alberta might be a little over enthusiastic ;-)
