Starting my airfare tracking for our Trip in May 2017: LAX-CDG and FCO-LAX so I plugged in dates in October...WOW...American Airlines $837.00, Delta $849.00 ...one was even non-stop and the others had great layover times and overall flight times. I really hope these prices stick around for my trip! My airfare budget is $1,200.00pp so this would be 30% savings for me, that's huge.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but... May is generally higher than October. Delta's last sale was GREAT, but I had to go in March not May because the deal ended at the end of March.
Airline tickets are usually available 11 months in advance. What fares can you find for your preferred travel dates?
Laura- $1,900.00 on comparable airlines.
We usually travel in October, but there is an event we want to attend at the end of May, so May it is! Not my preferred time but it will be interesting to be in Europe in the Spring/Summer...never been.
I have found it to be a strange airfare year. We found $540 RT airfare from Minneapolis to Zurich for the end of August. Usually it is over twice that. Make sure you check out google flights and rometorio.com where I found our latest bargain. Happy searching!
Letizia,
I bought RT direct tickets to Rome, Italy from Atlanta for March 24, 2017 for $751 from Delta Airlines. Big sale the last week of June!
Are you not finding the sale prices for your dates in May 2017?
Judy B
Judy- Delta is showing the $1,900.00 right now for my dates, but I really feel it is way to early for me to look. One of my friends got that Delta sale email and forwarded it to me. What a fantastic sale!! Hopefully they will do it again or another airline will. From the looks of it other airlines are offering some great prices...wish I was doing my normal October dates!!
Letizia, take a look at Norwegian Airlines.
They fly out of LAX. They don't fly every day but the prices are great.
I recently booked SFO to Amsterdam and back from Barcelona this Fall for $730 which includes seat selection, food, and checked bag. (I wasn't sure I could meet their weight limit for a colder weather trip.) It's low fare and you pay extra for everything, but it's still a bargain.
I don't think they are accepting bookings yet for May but you can check the posted fares.
Happy trails!
It's worth subscribing to the alerts at http://loyaltytraveler.boardingarea.com/ there have been a number of deep fare sales to Europe this summer. Right now they show a roundtrip "Los Angeles or San Francisco at $526 to Belfast, Northern Ireland" and they've listed flights to other European cities from the West coast for similar prices in the past few months
We go Minneapolis to Glasgow and back on Icelandic Air for 800 apiece for 4 of us next may. Stop over on iceland.
Thanks Bill, I will check that out!
Vick, were thinking of doing the Iceland layover...also thinking of flying to the east coast and leaving from there, but that makes for long travel days and we only have 15 days.
I will check out the other suggestions! Thanks all
Keep tracking airfares - you may be lucky and get a good price for a May trip given current events. Unfortunately I think tourism will be affected and we may continue to see airfare sales. Good for those who are undeterred, me included. Last year I paid $1900 for a trip from Atlanta to Berlin and return from Vienna to Atlanta, but I bought tickets in April for a June trip. A month ago I pounced on the Delta sale for my RT to Rome next March! I hope you will find a good sale that suits your budget.
Happy travels,
Judy B
For rock bottom prices don't forget to look into Norwegian Air Shuttle. I've had my eye on them and other posters here have had good experiences. I personally have not flown with them but was considering trying to plan a trip using them just for the savings alone. They only fly from from a handful of US cities and LAX is one.
For months I have been tracking San Diego or LAX to London (return) for next April and combinations every which way via SF, Dallas, Minneapolis, Vancouver! NY, Atlanta, Toronto...you name it and all I see is $1300+. There are 4 of us so needless to say I'm still shopping for flights.
When I see lower fares they are on Aeroflot...or require 3 stops, etc. The layovers in Iceland (both ways) add quite a bit to a very long flight from the west coast so I've not pursued that option...yet 😀
I was thrilled when I heard about Norwegian air until I started reading the reviews---there are an extraordinary number of bad reviews. although they appear to have rock bottom prices I have been deterred by the final price combined with many shocking reviews--- a number of people saying staff refuse to give passengers even a cup of water if passengers had not pre-ordered a meal. If others have had great experiences, would love to hear.
SuzieQ- Try Air New Zealand for your London Trip. We used them 8 years ago for RT LAX-London and took advantage of a Travelzoo deal for $700.00 each RT, non stop. Travelzoo recently (1 month ago??) had a similar sale on Air New Zealand and it was $780.00 each RT. I cannot say enough good things about that airline, from the comfort of the seats, to the New Zealand wines served, the entertainment and the food.
Thx for the tip on Air New Zealand. I had not considered them.
They are charging charging $1468 from Los Angeles to London. In April.
The search continues. Happy travels to all.

SuzieQ- I looked on the Travelzoo website and they have this promotion currently running:
$724* & up -- London Nonstop from Los Angeles (Roundtrip)
Source: Air New Zealand | By Travelzoo Staff
Get one checked bag for free along with snacks and beverages
Sept. 11 - Dec. 13; Jan. 9 - March 31
Looks like the sale does not meet your travel dates (of course!), but I would sign up for the Travelzoo alerts, it is how we found our great deal for our London flight! They could land up extending it or adding dates in the future.
I agree about Norwegian Air. They do get some bad reviews. I was really hoping to use them, and the planes look new and nice, so I think it is a matter or knowing what you are in for and if the low cost is worth it. If I could get a great deal elsewhere I might not use them, if not, I might bite the bullet and try, knowing what I need to be prepared for (bringing my own food and drink, blanket etc.).
