Couple Mobile Pass Questions...

We have 2 each 3 month continuous Eurail passes for next spring. (that 25% off discount was an amazing event last week)

  1. Can/Should I load both our passes on both our Eurail Travel planner apps? Just in case a phone gets broken or lost on the way to the train station? (not sure if that can be done yet, but I hope it can) Or do I need to have one pass on each phone. I am assuming that eurail app allows my to show the pass in the app it at the gate or to a conductor. I don't want to chance activating the pass before we get there so I am being overly cautious with those passes.

  2. What does everyone use to show the seat reservation confirmations? The first one I bought, only came in an email as a pdf attached, there was no other choice but to "print at home". It cannot be added to the apple wallet, I guess the train company needs to pay apple to enable that. Sometimes I just hate apple.... The train company says I can show the attached pass from the email from our phones on the train, but I would prefer it was in an app meant for doing that easily like Apple Wallet does for boarding passes. I looked at the Folio app but its not really meant for that, it cannot import a pdf, just allows taking a picture of it. Its really meant to have ID's in it.

Thanks, Bill

I am not seeing a way to import a .pdf file into that. Just scan. I would think I need to actual pdf file so it can be enlarged to show at a gate or to a conductor when asked. Notes doesn't appear to be the tool to use for this.

I import PDF files and other tickets and scans into Notes all the time. Just go to Finder, locate the PDF file, then click Share (by either right-clicking or clicking on the Share icon at the top). Once you do, a menu will open up with various options for places to share it to, include Notes. Click on Notes, and your file will make its way there. I usually add some text to it to make it easier to find if I need it.

What is finder called on an iPhone? I tried the app store, nothing came up related to the Finder app that wasn't for something else. -Bill

Bill, open the pdf on your phone. Then at the bottom of the pdf, choose the share option (square with arrow pointing up). Once you tap on share, multiple choices will appear. Pick the Notes app. Give it a name and tap Save.

I follow Mary’s process but I save in Files. I created a folder for Travel and save my PDF’s there.

That way to save pdf into notes works. Doesn't really seem that have any security at all though like a wallet does for boarding passes and other expensive things. I sure hope I can find an app that will encrypt it as it appears you can either sync it with icloud or keep it on the phone. It seems backup doesn't work for notes unless sync to iCloud is enabled too. odd

Anyone have an answer to the First question about putting both our passes on one phone or both phones or one on each phone?

During international travel with a friend last September and this past February our travel documents, tickets, passes, etc. were available on each of our devices. We made sure that individualized items were labeled and filed so as not to use the other’s in error. It’s a great idea to do for the reasons that you’ve expressed concern about.

I cannot address the rail planner app specifically because I’ve never used it. If necessary you may be able to load the app on each device and employ the same user name and password. Thus you’ll both have access to the passes.

You will need to put your pass on your phone (Rail Planner app) and your travel partner's pass on their phone. Doesn't really work well any other way IME.

By the way, you will want to plan actual travel routes using the app associated with each country's primary rail provider. For example, in Italy, use TrenIT!; use Koleo in Poland, etc. In every country we visited this summer, the rail app for the primary provider also gave info on competing lines (Italy, Germany, Austria). Can't speak to Spain or France.

Finally, many, if not most, seat reservations will need to be secured through the rail provider rather than through Eurail. We took screenshots of the pdf seat reservations we received by email and queued them up to show the conductor. A bit annoying at first, but you get into a rhythm.

Eurail really needs to somehow couple its pass to Apple Pay and Google Wallet. With that said, for the continuous pass the Rail Planner app works great.

I have both my husbands and my pass on my phone. I'm much less likely to lose it than he is:). My understanding is that a pass can only be on one device so you can either have both on one phone or each have your own on your individual phone. It was quite easy to set up and make a copy of the "trip" for the 2nd pass. I found the info on seat61.com to be the best info out there on how to use and set up the pass.

I printed all my reservations, however I also have the DB app which has the reservations and the rail planner app shows the reservations I made through them. I just printed them for peace of mind.
