Anybody have an estimate on cost of train from these two cities. I can find timetables everywhere but not the cost.
Any suggestions, ideas??
You can get fares at www.raileurope.com. Depending upon the type of train(s) taken, the 2nd class fares range from $47 to $68. Note, however, that if you buy tickets at a station in Europe, they will most likely be cheaper. RailEurope's fares tend to be inflated.
There is an EC that leaves Budapest at 9:10 and gets into Vienna at 12:09. Elvira.hu gives the fare from Budapest to the last stop in Hungary, Hegyeshalom (11:07), at 2930 Ft, €11,66. Austrian Rail gives the fare from Bruck an der Leitha (11:26) at €10,90. So, the fare for the entire trip, purchased in Budapest, must be somewhere around €25, maybe a little less.

Note, both the Austrian Rail website and the website for Hungarian Rail will usually only give fares for travel entirely within their country. That's why I estimated the fare.
Austrian Rail does have some €19 SparScheine fares to Hungary, but they probably require that the trip start in Austria, ie, Vienna to Budapest one way or Vienna to Budapest and back. These tickets must be purchased at ticket counters in Austria or by calling their call center, (Aust. area code, 43, I think) 5-1717.
I went from Vienna to Budapest on July 6. The 2nd class fare, including seat reservation, was just over EUR 37 (about $50). Budapest to Vienna fare should be about the same. I bought the ticket the day before I traveled.
When I called the Austrian railway office (see 2 messages above) they seemed able to sell tickets inbound to Vienna even without an outbound segment. We bought 19 EUR tickets Vienna to Budapest - what a great deal! And it was easy to order over the phone.
