So we're looking at getting the comfy, cozy 1st class, private sleeper berths on our Prague to Krakow night train, and then on the Krakow to Budapest night train. Rail Europe, from what I've read on here, is significantly up-marked. Not to mention, they are not selling the night train tickets for Krakow to Budapest (and I know the train exists because DB.de has it on their site...) Anyhow, can someone who has actually recently paid for one of these sleeper berths on one of these legs tell me how much it cost them buying it at the train station? If not, does anyone know approximately how much those tickets on Rail Europe are upmarked? Also, where can I find pictures of these berths? Or is the picture on the DB website similar? Thanks!
You may try this out as a "13 inch ruler:" In May we took the night train from AMS to Poznan and the cost was 179 Euros for 2.Only reason we took it was because of the volcano problems, otherwise would have flown. In my case, made the reservations on the Bahn website, and had the tickets sent to a customer on mine in the UK. Cozy would be an understatement, it basically had 2 berths, storage for 2 to 3 roll aboard cases, and us. Toilet down the hall. If you are a lite sleeper, get ear plugs. Finally, bring a picnic or go hungry.
We did the same two legs, in the opposite direction, in October '08. We just bought the tickets upon arrival in each city. Since the overnight trains arrive around 7:30 in the morning, it's a great time with no lines at the sales window. The cost was similar for both segments, under $150 U.S. for a private car. The picnic dinner only differs from one in a regular hotel room in that you typically have to keep your glass between your legs. After a nice meal of wursts 'n wine, I take diphenhydramine hcl, make one last venture to the bathroom, and don't emerge from our berth until we're kicked off the train by the porter.
i have always used the db website. i have gone from munich to rome, amsterdam to genoa and recently barcelona to granada. i usually get the private with bathroom including shower in the car. the spain train was incredible, unlike the others. it included four course dinner with wine and breakfast as usual. the munich and amsterdam costs were about $200-250 after exchange. spain probably $300. it is fun, and well worth it. really it is one nights hotel and transportation all in one. i got my spain tickets through rail europe and they were great because my railpass was through rick steves. have fun, be safe.
Thanks so much for the info, everyone. Jeff, DB only gives fares for train travel in Germany. So no prices pop up on these itineraries...
Try www.polrail.com; it's the English website for Poland's rr's. Should have told you this at the beginning, I probably was thinking of something else in my first reply.
Thanks, Jerry! I went to the website, and sent an email asking specifically for the Krakow [INVALID] Budapest night train. When I turned on my computer this morning, I already had a response. They quoted me 886 Zloty (about $283.00) total for two people in a two person compartment. They said that there is no first class compartment on this train, only second class. I guess I'll go go to the Prague Rail site and try the same thing. I'm posting this in case anyone else looks this up to get the same answers... If I get an answer about the Prague [INVALID] Krakow train, I'll post that, too. Thanks to everyone who helped...
