I am looking at booking a flight for the end of May. Departing 5/28 on Lufthansa from LAX to venice and the return flight would be on United from Lisbon to Newark. The cost on AAA is $1324. To me it seems like a decent price for the time of year..any opinions?

www.lufthansa.com or www.unitedairlines.com See what price you can get on your own. Fares trans-Atlantic rise in late May so the return date makes a difference. If AAA can get you that price with reasonable times to make your flight connections, it could be a bargain.

Our return flight is 6/12 and directly through Lufthansa was coming out to 1348.. I want to buy tickets soon but I'm not sure if they are likely to go down before they go up

The $1324 is a very good price. Just make sure you can deal with the departure and arrival times, times between flights and the number of flight changes en route. Some folks, like me, will pay a bit more to not have to change planes more than once.

The rate you've been quoted is corresponding with what I see on ITA Matrix.
The cheapest fares I've found anywhere are on FareBoom.com. Compare their rates. It almost looks like they give up part of their commission.
