Convertible carry-on pack and RyanAir

I'm planning on flying from Dublin to Paris on RyanAir instead of the 18 hr ferry crossing. I'm concerned about RyanAir's strict carry-on regs. I'll be traveling with my new RS convertible carry-on pack that seems to be 1 inch larger than regs. Has anyone had any issues with this? What about Swiss army knives in carry-on?

If it doesn't fit inside of the measuring rack they use before boarding, than it is too big. They pretty much check every bag and when they say one bag, they mean one bag, it doesn't mean you get to carry a purse or camera bag too. About that knife. Can you bring that on a flight in the US? Strongly suggest you read the rules on the website about what is ok and what is not ok. I don't think any airport allows knives in carry-ons and it has nothing to do with Ryanair.

Jo is right about Ryanair's strictness. However, since it's a softsided bag, and as long as it's not packed so tight there is no give, the top of the bag will push into itself when placed in the sizer. Or at least it should. Leave the Swiss Army Knife at home. Not allowed in carry-on. (Some may have gotten them passed security but that was more a fluke than the rules.)

I have read some instances where even if the soft bag is able to be squished into the holder, they will say that it is over-sized since it does not fit ordinarily and will charge you. Hope this isn't your experience, but it is a possibility.

Maggie, In addition to the size, you'll have to be concerned with the fully loaded weight of your new RS Convertible bag. You can be darn sure that if it's even a bit over the limit, RyanAir will "nick" you for an overweight luggage charge (and it won't be cheap!). I had that experience on my last trip with RyanAir (although that was with checked luggage).

Maggie, Ryanair will "nick" you for an overweight bag even for a carry-on too, as I found out when traveling back once from London...the checked weight is 15 kg and carry-on is 10 kg, about 22 lbs.
