Connection time in Frankfurt

I am flying from JFK to Venice on Lufthansa, with a 2-hr connection in Frankfurt. Since I am connecting to another Lufthansa flight, will 2 hours be enough time to make the connection? I know Frankfurt is such a huge airport, I am a little concerned about this.

I have read that I will have to go thru Passport Control in Frankfurt and Customs when I get to Venice. Is this correct? So I assume that I don't have to get my own luggage in Frankfurt...that it will be transferred to my connecting flight?

Thanks for your help!

Cat, 2 hours should be plenty of time to make that connection without having to worry about anything. yes, it's a large airport. But you should be fine with that amount of time. Here are some guidelines when having to deal with customs and a layover:

2-2.5 hours is a perfect amount of time. You should feel un-rushed and un-bored.

2.5-3 hours you will be bored. Make a stop for a meal or something in the airport.

3-6 hours you will be bored and not able to leave most airports to do any sightseeing unless the airport is in the middle of the city with fantastic public transportation.

6+ hours you can try to leave the airport to sightsee or meet a friend but don't go too far.

1-1.5 hours should be enough to make you a little anxious but still not worth an ulcer.

1-0.5 hours is worth a great deal of concern but still doable in the right circumstances.

Less than 30 minutes is not doable and you should plan on missing a flight.

Thanks, Jarrod! I thought that since I was connecting to another Lufthansa flight that we would be OK.
But then I got to wondering if we had to go thru Customs in Frankfurt, and if so, it might be too tight.

Ballpark, how long does it take to go thru Passport control and get to your connecting gate in Frankfurt?

And then, on our return flight (also connecting in Frankfurt), we have a 5-hr connection!!! YIKES!!!

Cat, I haven't been on a connecting flight through Frankfurt. It has always been my arrival destination or the place I'm departing. So I'm not of a lot of help in that area. I just remember the airport being under a lot of construction. This was in Dec. 06. It felt like a manageable size. I was also not flying Lufthansa. I have no idea what the lines and such are going to be like. I remember the Lufthansa/United part of the airport being very busy with a lot of people.

I do remember the security people being very inefficient. It took close to 30 min to get 20 people through security with security lines open. When we got to the x-ray machine the person running the x-ray was running things through about 3 or 4 times even though the bags were already x-rayed at the ticket counter once by another security agent. I realize they need to be thorough, but something has to be said for being efficient as well.

I have been to Frankfurt as a final destination also, but never made a connection thru there. I remember it being HUGE and a lot of construction.
I'll just hope for the best and pray that we are on time!!!

Correct, passport control in Frankfurt, customs in Venice. Your luggage will be transferred. Please see the explanation in the similar post regarding Amsterdam.

Official minimum connecting time (MCT) in Frankfurt is 45 minutes. I did in 35 minutes, and I even had to go through passport control. The connection was officially 45 minutes but was reduced to 35 minutes due to delayed arrival. I must admit that I walked as fast as possible and was a little worried! Passport lines were about 10 minutes, boarding was more than halfway through when I arrived to the gate for my flight to HKG. 2 hours should be plenty!

Thanks, chrismo! You must have been really running to make a connection in 35 min!!!!!

But I am relieved to know that I won't have to take my luggage thru Customs in Frankfurt...that will save a little time!

Do you know if I will have to go thru another security line before I board my connecting flight? Those are what takes up so much time!

In June we had three hours for our connection in FRA. Our orig fight was one hour late, then Lufthansa had some sort of problem and could not procees any tickets, and the line did not move.

When it got down to 15 minutes before our flight, someone came out from behind the LUFT. counter and wisked the people on our flight down to the gate. We did not get our original seats, and we were the last ones to be allowed on the plane.

Yup, three hours should be more than enough time for a Luft. transfer in FRA, but when we went from another airline (Air One, a Luft. subsid) it was barely enough time in FRA in June.

Well, on my way back to the US, a 5-hour layover should be about right!!!!!! YIKES!

I'm still worried about my 2-hr connection Saturday morning.......just hope & pray our flight from JFK will be on-time!!!

I think, there might be an extra security check when arriving from the US and connecting. I am not sure... Things change all the time.

I have been through FRA from a US flight - your 2 hour connection should be enough if your original flight is not delayed. You do go through passport/customs (mostly passport, not a lot of customs). Passport control was overwhelmed when I arrived and it did take nearly 45 minutes to get through. Not to scare you but just be mentally prepared! Frankfurt is a big airport, and chances are you'll be bussed out to your plane from the gate (not enough gates for planes). If you're checking luggage, make sure you put your hotel info on the tag just in the off chance your luggage doesn't make the change with you (incentive to carry on!). Also when you check in at JFK, make sure to ask that they check you through to your Venice flight. Then they'll know to expect you at FRA. Personally, my 4.5 hour layover was a bit dreary, so you're lucky to have a decent connection time.

Thanks, CL. I am trying my best to carry-on as much as I can. But the 16.5 pound weight limit is making me crazy!
I'm connecting in FRA for a cruise in Venice, so I sure hope the luggage makes it!!! Wonder if I should put the dock agent in Venice on my suitcase, instead of a hotel as you suggested?
