Connection through Vienna and luggage

I will be traveling to Venice from the US in Sept with a connection in Vienna on Austrian Airlines (40 min layover). If I understand correctly there will only be a passport check at Vienna and checked luggage wont be looked at until the customs inspection in Venice. My question is regarding carry on luggage. Will carry on items be subject to inspection at Vienna? If they are would it be a good idea to check most luggage to avoid the inspection and save time? I traditionally travel mostly carry-on to avoid lost luggage but my layover in Vienna is short and thus my question.

Regards,

Steve

Your carry on items won't be inspected by customs but may have to go through a security screening. Last year we flew into Vienna on Austrian and then flew out to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines and had to go through a security screening. Not sure if this was just due to the gate/area that the Turkish flight was leaving from or whether all connecting passengers have to go through a security screening. Either way it only took 5 or so minutes.

In Vienna, the security/passport screening is at the gate. You will put your carry-on, coat, etc. through the x-ray there. It does not add time, as everyone is doing it and it is only people on your flight.
