Connection Procedures at Amsterdam Schiphol?

Hello everyone, hope you are doing well.

My dad and I are traveling on a Mediterranean cruise this May out of Rome. We fly from Detroit to Amsterdam on NW, and Amsterdam to Rome on KLM. Have any of you connected through Amsterdam before? Will we have to clear customs and/or "start from scratch" at the ticket desks? We have a three hour layover, so I'm not particularly worried about the time, but I would be greatly appreciate any information regarding the process of connecting internationally through AMS.

Thanks again, and happy travels!

I'm sure someone can answer your specific question. In the mean time, type the letters "AMS" into the search box at the top of your browser screen. You can read through 59 previous posts on AMS airport in Amsterdam, providing all kinds of extra info.

If you are on KLM all the way and flying out the same day as you arrive, your baggage should be routed through and you will only clear customs in Rome. You will be "in transit" in Amsterdam and in a secure area till you board the next plane.

The counter agent in Detroit should ask you if you want your luggage checked through to your final destination, Rome. If the agent doesn't ask, then you need to mention it to the agent. There's no need for you to pick up your luggage and recheck it in AMS. Since you are on NW and KLM, which code-share their flights, there will be no problem with this. The counter agent in Detroit will also give you boarding passes for the Amsterdam-to-Rome flight. Thus, at AMS, all you have to do is find the gate for your connecting flight. And check out the cool Lego version of Schipol airport, in AMS!

Once you get to Rome, claim your luggage and go through customs. Which means that, as long as you have nothing to declare, just walk through the green, "Nothing To Declare" lane.

In AMS, you may have to go through several security checkpoints, depending upon what gate you arrive at and what gate you depart from. You could very well have to go through immigration also, again, depending upon the gates. My experiences in AMS have been that everything is run efficiently, so 3 hours should be plenty of time.

At Schipol Airport you will go through the immigration check on the way to your gate. Your checked baggage will automatically sent to your connecting flight to Rome.

Schipol has better & clearer signage than most airports, and in English. Bright yellow signs with black lettering . . . you'll have no trouble.

If you have extra time there is a branch of the Rijksmuseum located in the Schiphol airport. It would be a wonderful place to kill some time waiting for your connecting plane.
