I hope someone will be able to confirm my understanding of an international arrival from Chicago (ORD) at ROME (FCO) and then connecting to a domestic flight to Venice (VCE). The inbound flight will arrive in terminal 3, and the outbound flight will depart from terminal 1. The baggage will be tagged at ORD through to final destination (VCE). So, I should be able to bypass baggage collection at FCO and walk within the secure zone to my connecting gate in Terminal 1. I would then collect my baggage in Venice (VCE) and process thru Customs there. If my understanding is incorrect, please help me with the procedure I will need to follow. Thanks.
All the info you need, with great illustrations, is at the following link. When you land at FCO in Rome you will be entering the Schengen Area from a non-Schengen country, so you must pass through Passport Control and have your passport stamped. The process is described in great detail at the following site, and everyone else on your flight will be doing the same thing, so follow along to Passport Control. After that the signage to your connecting gate should be clear. http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/fco-terminal-3-arrivals-area After Passport Control follow the TRANSIT passenger signs and walk to the T1 Gates. I haven't done a transfer in Rome for a long while, and RoninRome's page isn't entirely clear about it. Someone else will chime in and hopefully clarify whether you have to collect your baggage and recheck it and then pass through Security again in T1.
My response is actually based on been there and done that. Slightly off. You will need to got through immigrations in terminal 3, and then to terminal 2 gate but that will also put you outside of security. Be prepared for major hassle going through immigrations. Depending on lots of factors - number of planes arriving near the same time, number of offices on duty, etc. We were just in Rome two weeks ago arriving around noon. Only two officers processing immigrations so it took over an hour to get through. There was one officer roaming the area pulling out family with children and elderly folks and moving them to the front of the line. If you have a tight connect you might flag him down. Good luck. Remember, you are in Italy.
Frank, I was there in December and didn't experience a long wait - though the young Passport Control guys were more sullen than usual. It was 8:00 PM on a holiday, so I suppose it's understandable. They were expediting families with children, but I got through in about 10 minutes once I got to the line for the actual Passport check windows. I expected Rome to be less crowded in December than in summer, but it was still very crowded and baggage claim did take a while.
Thanks Rose and Frank. I understand that I will process through Immigration upon arrival and then will be able to walk to my departure gate in T1 via the Transit route. I'm still not clear whether or not I will have to exit the secure area along the way and then process through security once again in T1 terminal before continuing on to my departure gate?
Ken, I sent you a DM.
You will exit security and need to go through security.
Rose, were you on an international flight that landed around 8 pm? Where were you coming from?
Frank I think it'd have to be either Peking, Tokyo, or São Paulo, since they're the only internationals that chug in that late.
