We are flying to the UK and can either connect via JFK or AMS. I’ve seen the horror stories about Amsterdam but have never heard much good about JFK. I’m currently booked to fly next Sunday via AMS but am wondering if I should switch the tickets. Thoughts?
I have never had any problems with JFK, flown out of there and through there many times.
Where are you flying from? If from the USA and assuming this is booked on 1 ticket, all you have to do in AMS is walk to the next gate. Your transfer in Amsterdam is a simple non-Schengen to non-Schengen one. You won’t go thru security or passport control, just deplane and walk to the gate your other flight is departing from.
Dutch_traveler’s advice is consistent with my experience. I regularly use JFK as a departure point to Europe. It has eight terminals connected by an AirTrain which is not airside. If your flights connect in different terminals it could mean another trip through security unless there is an airside option such as Delta Airlines has in place. Amsterdam is a very easy airport for making connections for onward travel.
Well, yes, we are on one ticket and this won’t have to do passports and security at AMS. We do need to check luggage and I’m concerned it won’t make it.
The current issues at Amsterdam mostly effect passengers departing from Amsterdam, not those who are transferring. You can of course always change your flight if that makes you feel more comfortable.
If you fly into Amsterdam, at least you will be in Europe (and much closer to your destination) if there is a problem with the connection. Also be much easier for wayward luggage to catch up to you should that problem arise.
Sounds like you're ticketed on SkyTeam—if you go through JFK are both those flights on Delta metal? If so, the connection in JFK would all be in terminal 4.
(Same if you're connecting Delta to Virgin.)
We connected via AMS to the UK last week. Gate to gate in about fifteen minutes, and our bags made it easily too.
Delta uses Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 at JFK. Additionally, Delta provides an airside transfer between the two terminals for its passengers.
I would still however choose to connect via AMS.
