Confusion re rail passes - Italy/France

Oh, so confused! Taking several train trips mid-July- Venice to Ascona, Switzerland; then from Ascona back to Paris (to fly home from De Gaulle.) Questions: 1 - More economical to buy 2-country Eurorail pass (France/Italy), or just purchase individual tix? And which train is best to take from Milan to Paris? Any help extremely welcome!! Thanks,
Ellen

I don't know why you need a pass. You should be able to find a 19 Euro Supereconomy fare from Venice to Milan. Use local trains and ferry to get between Milan and Ascona. I see there are TGV fares from Milano P.Garibaldi and Paris G.Lyon for as low as 35 Euro.

I think it depends how long your trip is and home much train travel you are doing. If you are only taking these train trips that you speak about, point to point would be great. And I have heard once you get there, you can get cheap flights. If you are taking a 3 week trip and plan to be on the train every day or 2 days, I would say a Eurail. We have taken several trips. 19 days- 9 countries- did a 3 week eurail.
22 days-6 countries. 3 week eurail but didn't use it 2 days at the beginning and 2 days at end. This June 20 days- 10 countries- One month Eurail. If you are going with someone else, check into a Supersaver. You must travel with your partner all the time on trains, but much cheaper. Hope that helps, Karen

Remember that France is no longer participating in the Selekt passes.

"And I have heard once you get there, you can get cheap flights. " This is no longer true. The cheap flights, like the cheap trains, are for advance purchase. Once the allotment of less expensive tickets sells out, the price goes up. And these flights can be completely sold out, in which case no amount of money will get you on the plane. So, if anyone is interested in a cheap flight (not applicable to the OP), buy it NOW, and don't wait until you get there.
