Condor to introduce low-cost nonstop service between Calgary and Frankfurt

Starting May 2011 the German low cost airline and Lufthansa subsidiary/Star Alliance member will offer twice-weekly flights between Alberta and Frankfurt. The flights will be operated by Boeing 767s, which are 16-20 years old but have just undergone major technical renovation. New fuel-saving wing-tipps have been installed for example.

Andreas,

Thanks for the note. It seems the "closed skies" in Canada are opening up a bit.

That will provide me with another option for getting to Europe, as I often connect in Calgary. My local airport (Kelowna) spent a fortune lengthening the runway to accomodate international flights, but since Zoom went bankrupt they haven't found an airline that wants to stop here. I have a feeling it will happen eventually, especially now that the Sparkling Hills luxury European Wellness Resort is now open.

On a related note, I believe WestJet has just entered into some kind of "partnership" with American Airlines or one of the other large U.S. carriers.

Cheers!
