staying at lake como either in belagio or verenna & wanting to take a day hike trip to switzerland. should we rent a car or take train? Best place in Switz to go for the best views with little time? Any tips that would be helpful since we've never been. Also, would it be better to just visit lake como & stay somewhere in switzerland instead? thanks for suggestions!
Not sure what you mean day hike trip. Here is a proposal. 7:24 train Varenna to Tirano arr 8:50. Change to Bernina Express (actually the local) at 9:40 to Caviglia or Alp Gruem. Alp Gruem arr 10:14. Investigate hiking trails, these towns are near the top of the Bernina pass. Return trains are approximately every hour. I have never been there, but I sure wouldn't do this in the winter, or even midddle to late fall. Could be nasty weather. Did see a restaurant at Alp Gruem that stays open until Nov 2. Looks like train fare would be 14 Euro pp for Italian leg and 17.20 chf pp for Swiss leg. You'll have to do rearch "Hiking Bernina Pass". Anyway, if you can rent a car for a day in Varenna for less than 75 Euro, that may be the best way to go. Little more flexibility.
