Colmar France to Milan/Varenna train vs plane

Hello all,

I'm planning a trip to Europe leaving in two week. Once in Europe I usually always travel by train but the most I try to do in a day is 4 to 5 hours. I did a little research on trains from Colmar to Varenna and it looks like it will take about 8 hours with 3 to 4 different trains. I was wondering if I should try to book a flight from Colmar to Milan and then take the train to Varenna. Has anyone done this or does anyone have any advice? What airlines have you used in France/Italy?

I'm not seeing flights out of Colmar. I haven't done it but train is looking good based on what I've seen.

Colmar is a bit of a backwater. You probably would not save much time flying as you would need to find an airport, specifically one with flights to Milan. Added to that, a plane ticket at this late date would be pricy, even on budget airlines. Depending on your past experiences, a train trip through the Alps is, for me, one of those travel experiences to be enjoyed and worth a day in itself. Otherwise, pick a spot betwwen and do a night along the way.

You may want to do what we did in 2005. Took the train to Strasbourg, FR and took a plane to Brussels. It was cheaper and less time as any major train ride meant that we had to go back to Paris first. As Strasbourg has a lot of EU business, a lot of flights connect there and a lot of the smaller European airlines go there.
