Closed bus station on route from Siena train station to the old city

There is a mall next to the train station. The mall has a bus stop on the lower level as described in Rick's guide book. The bus stop is under construction so one can not pick up a city bus to the Duomo in Siena. A map is shown of how to walk to another stop. It appeared that the route was on active city streets without a sidewalk, so we avoided.
The alternative is to take the free escalator from the mall up to the top of the hill. It is a long, interesting ride. At the end of the escalator it is a five minute walk to one of the old city gates.
Skip the bus, take the escalator.
