Cittavecchia port: ground transportation to/from Rome

The two of us would like to find inexpensive ground transportation, e.g., a shuttle bus or train, from Cittavecchia port to Rome and return. We only have the one day in port so convenience is a factor.

If you searched this site a little bit you will find dozens of responses to this identical question. There is a train from port 45 mins to 1:15 depending on the train. It is a commuter run, 3 to 4 trains an hour. Again, depending on train, less than 10E. Since you are returning buy a metro pass for 9E (last Oct). It will cover all your transportation in Rome, and to and from Civ. VALIDATE THE TICKET in the yellow boxes PRIOR TO USING. There will be a shuttle bus to the port entrance and you can walk along the beach to the station -- less than a half mile. The train station will be an absolute zoo especially if more than one ship in port.

Steve will be along shortly with his standard reference to the Rome Walk video. I think it is somewhat inaccurate and misleading but gives an general overview.

Frank is right about the train and its easy as we did it last fall from the cruise ship. We took the shuttle to the port entrance, then a ten minute walk to the station and I think we caught a train about 8 am.Would add one piece of advice...we got off the train at San Pietro station instead of travelling to Termini. We walked a short way and came out at Vatican Square and were able to visit the area (including a front line photo of the Pieta) before all the tour buses arrived. By the time we went round the rotunda and left the Vatican, it was a zoo and you couldnt get near the Pieta. We caught a train back from the same station about 5.30 pm and really managed to pack in lots of sights including using the Metro and the bus on our 9 Euro BIRG ticket.. E mail if you need more assist.

some tips--we bought our tickets the day prior at another Italian port at the train station--any train station in Italy can sell you a ticket--I don't know if you can get a BIRG--that's the all day including metro ticket, but it's worth just getting a one way or RT the day prior--then, we just walked up, validated and got on the train to Rome and left--many were going to have to wait for the next train b/c they didn't have a ticket yet. Even if you can't pre-buy a BIRG ticket and have to shell out a few more Euros for metro in Rome (we never used it--easily walked from Train to Sp. Steps, Trevi, Pantheon, Colo), it's worth having a ticket in hand.
Also, you can get one way, RT and maybe BIRG at the tobacco store in the train station at Cittav.---no one knew this--the police told my friends--they had no wait and were on our train.
As others have said, it's very easy to DIY at this port. Have fun. Elaine
