Help! I have spent all day trying to figure out the fastest way from Cinque Terre to Provence. Any one have any experience or ideas? Merci et grazie!
The Trenitalia site won't show you legs entirely outside of Italy. Use the German Rail for detailed timetables for virtually all of Europe. After you get summary timetables for the Cinque Terre town of your choice to the town in Provence of your choice, click on the arrow to the left of the departure time(s) of your choice to see the connecting points.
You are looking at an all-day ride with multiple connections.
My experience: leave Monterosso very early (6 or 7 am), arrive in Genoa a couple of hours later. Catch train to Nice, arrive around noon. Maybe change trains in Ventimiglia; I don't remember whether I did or not. You can get to Paris this way if you are willing to spend about 14 hours.
You would then take a train from Nice to Marseilles; catch another train to Paris. Arrive about 8 pm. It's been a few years, so schedules could have changed since then.
To get to Provence from Nice, you can catch a train to Avignon or? and arrive in the afternoon.
