My travel plans include getting from Riomaggiore to Munich on July 15. I am wondering what people would suggest. Train the whole way(and what trains to take), train/air...? I checked several lowcost airlines from Milan to Munich but their flights were in the $500 range. I need some help here!
If you fly on budget airlines, it will be cheaper to take an indirect route and book two separate tickets.
You can fly MXP-CGN and CGN-MUC on Germanwings.
You can fly MXP-DUS and DUS-MUC on Air Berlin. You also can fly MXP-TXL and TXL-MUC on Air Berlin.
By train your fastest daytime route would be to leave Riomaggiore at 07:27, connect in La Spezia and Bologna, and arrive in Munich at 18:25. See the timetables on the German Rail site. After you get summary timetables for Riomaggiore-Muenchen, click on the arrow to the left of the departure time(s) of your choice to see the connecting points.
If you book the EC train that leaves Bologna at 11:55 and arrives in Munich at 18:25 right now on the German Rail site, you still can get a Europa-Spezial Italien Savings fare of 39 EUR. Buy your Riomaggiore-La Spezia and La Spezia-Bologna tickets when you get to Italy. The fare for both tickets together is only 13.55 EUR.
I'd vote for the train myself. No hassle getting to and from airports, a chance to relax and see the countryside pass by, and a low carbon footprint.
Wow! That was a very thorough answer. It gives me a point to start thinking from! Thank you very much.
You're welcome, Lisa. Have a great trip!
