Chunnel to Calais then Car Rental

Has anyone taken the Chunnel as far as Calais--then gotten a rental car to explore Normandy? How far would it be from the train station to a car rental office ,say at the car ferry location? Thanks!!

Autoeurope has a desk right in the ferryport office.

When you say "taken the Chunnel" do you mean taken the train (Eurostar) that travels through the channel tunnel? If so, the train does not stop at Calais. Your options on the French side would be Paris or Lille.

There are two early morning Eurostar trains and one late evening Eurostar train that stop in Calais on their way from London to Paris.

Thanks Tim. Rick, Sorry for the misinformation... I didn't know that any trains stopped in Calais (and I've taken the Eurostar 30+ times). Learn something new all the time.

You're welcome, Laura. Like you, I'm always learning something new.

According to viamichelin.com, it's 9-10 km from the Calais-Frethun train station to the ferry port.

Booked far enough in advance (up to 120 days allowed), you can get a single (one-way) fare as low as £37.

Thanks for all the quick input!! I'm trying to decide whether to take the train all the way from London to Calais--or to hop across from Dover to Calais by ferry.

Take the ferry! It's really interesting to see the white cliffs of Dover. When you arrive in Calais, there are many car rental offices in the ferry port. We used AvIS, I think Hertz is there also and lots of others. Your car will be right outside in the parking lot, easy exit. Honfleur is a lovely stop, then Rouen. Besides Normandy, you might enjoy St. Malo and Dinan which are just across the border into Brittany.

Do what Cynthia said, which was what I was thinking until I read Tim's business about how far it was from train to ferryport -- which probably really had you going in circles. Sorry. Ferry is interesting.

Why would my post have Rick going in circles? He specifically asked how far it is from the train station to the ferry port where he knows he can pick up a rental car.

Tim

My post probably had him going in circles. Not yours. I was thinking train to Dover then ferry across. Thus, I said car place was in ferryport.

Failed to realize my inability to read and think at the same time until you pointed out distance from train station to ferryport.
