Christmas river cruise

Looking at planning a Christmas markt river cruise, possibly from Vienna to Budapest. Has anybody done this and is it a good time

The advisability of this section of the river is questionable. Most of the Christmas market towns are in Germany.

I recommend river cruising because you see a different town each day and never have to unpack. Taking this cruise will depend on the towns you stop at.

I would research all the cruise lines to be sure you get the one that best meets your requirements.

You ask about the time, but you dont mention when you will go. You are limited to the time the market is open. I dont think you have much of a choice.

Thanks for the reply. I have been to quite a few Christmas Markts in Germany and i read good things about Vienna. I thought this might give us a chance to see part of Europe that we have not seen. What did you mean by this section of the river may be in question? Kind looking for a good reference on a cruise line. They all look good on the internet, but what is said on the internet may not allways be true.

Dear Andy,
the Christmas markets are truly beautiful.
Vienna to Budapest means Danube.
My beloved Danube is shrouded in fog from November to January.
You will not see *hit . . !!!!
Come in May!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Corrina,
Although that is disappointing, that is the kind of info that i need to know. Is the stretch from Nurenburg to Vienna smothered in fog too? Thanks so much for the info. Wish we could go in may, however, that is the only time we can go.

Thanks

Dear Andy,
I am assuming that you will begin your actual cruise on the ship near Nürnberg, on the Rhein-Main-Danube canal and then make your way down the Danube river from there.
I often lead groups from these cruises (many Avalon, when they stop in the Wachau valley, in Melk or in Dürnstein.
The ships are beautiful, you will be very comfortable there, and your land excursions will be nothing short of magical! As long as you come with the right expectations!! I can't speak to how foggy it is up by Nürnberg, but you may expect foggy, moist and cool weather all the way down the Danube river during this time of year. We have some sunny days in between too, but not as a rule!
I just want to point out that you might not see much of the landscape along the way, that was my point.
I am often a little upset at the disappointment of the passenger on the Christmas Market cruises, because of course they weren't told about the fog and chilliness. But you know now :-))))))))
Now you can concentrate on the positives :-)))
I hope you have a grand time, and may the sun shine just for you on your cruise.

We have taken 2 cruises with Grand Circle Travel - Vienna to Amsterdam in August 2007 and Budapest to the Black Sea just last month. This is the only river cruising I have done, and we were very happy with GCT. Good guides, good food, good optional excursions, and a good value for your dollar. Have a great time!

Andy,
My husband and I did a Christmas market tour a few years ago with Amadeus Waterways. We flew to Prague and spent two nights there and then took the train to Vienna and spent one night in the city. We then headed to the water front for our 7 night cruise on the Danube. We loved it and would like to do it again. The Christmas Markets are a fun experience at the holidays. We loved the cold weather because we are from CA. and we don't get much snow and cold weather. The cruise was mostly couples around 60 or so. I was 42 and I still loved the whole experience. It is nice to not have to pack and unpack every couple of days. The towns we visited were quaint. I would do it again! Have fun.
