Checking baggage domestic then int'l flight

(I've looked at the United web info, but am still confused.)

Am flying from San Antonio to Chicago on United, and then transfering to LOT airlines for trip to Poland. Two separate tickets, although they are alliance partners.

Do we pay for checked bag on the way to Chicago?

Cannot be done only with carry on, so that is not a solution.

Thanks.

Emily, my understanding is that when you have two separate tickets, you will have to re-check your luggage even between alliance partners. I hope someone will correct me if this is wrong.

If you have to check the luggage twice, you will have to pay the checked fee for the domestic flight, and also make sure you have enough time to retrieve/re-check your luggage, and get back through security.

One last suggestion, depending on what you are doing is to consider sending your checked luggage to your final destination via UPS or FedEx.
