Good advice I learned from the Forum is to monitor your reservation(s) for changes. (Some folks do it for pricing, too.) Last week all my Lufthansa flights' seats I'd purchased were there. Not today, for the European segments!
It said "not assigned". I got nowhere in the app other than buying "new" seats. An hour on the phone (but no hold time, nice. Lufthansa!) and there's been a change of aircraft and my seats didn't transfer due to a different configuration.
(Not as nice, Lufthansa. You could have alerted me!)
Anyway, we worked it out with a refund for the originals although the new ones ( basically same seats) were twice as much. Over $25 I didn't pursue the issue, just relieved to have caught it soon enough for the agent to make the correction.
Having the airline app is so helpful, too, even if I delete it after the trip if it's one I rarely use. Now to eliminate 1/2 lb from my carryon....
Yes, yes, yes…..keep checking because this seems to be happening more frequently. My daughter was booked on international flight with a window seat, they changed the plane and she ended up in the middle row without informing her…Not nice BA!
Yes! Delta does this quite often where they change aircraft and my seats and don’t inform me.
I do check my reservations frequently for that very reason.
Oh… and I recently added 2 new airline apps to my phone. I have 11 so far. You never know when you might be reassigned to that airline you rarely use because of a flight cancelation or oversold. Which has happened to me twice within the last year.
I had that happen to me in July with Icelandair, and it’s so frustrating. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the airlines would tell you, but they never do. But that is why I always check. Maybe not weekly, although I feel like I should be doing it more often.
Sometimes the changes will show up on the partner airline's app but not that of the actual carrier. It makes air travel even more exciting.
The times can change too, which is even more important to know. Air France changed the time of my Nice to Paris flight, giving me 65 minutes to make the connection to my transatlantic flight at CDG. I found out before we left the States so I tried to change it. They wouldn’t book me on an earlier flight from Nice without canceling and rebooking the entire itinerary, for about $1000 more (for 2 of us). I wasn’t willing to pay that, so I kept the original ticket. Luckily, we made the plane. Our checked luggage didn’t, but it did get to us the next day. (And we were home, so if it had taken longer, no big deal.)
"They wouldn’t book me on an earlier flight from Nice without canceling and rebooking the entire itinerary, for about $1000 more (for 2 of us)."
That happened with me last month. Delta changed my connection in SEA from 2 hours to 1 hour for a flight to AMS (I had another AMS-KRK). I had a fantastic return ticket (which I got during a glitch in the system and week before war) for KLM Premium, and did not want to mess that one up.
When they changed my connection, I contacted Delta and they said the same thing "you will need to rebook the ticket if we change the first flight, including the return and the price change is $2,500". This was for just one person! I explained I was not comfortable with the 1 hour connection given my 2 consecutive flights, etc. I escalated to the supervisor. Mind you I also reminded them I was stranded in JFK for 2 days during the summer due to a no-crew canceled flight to South America.
Making this long story short, the supervisor was not very friendly but was like "the earlier flight will give you a 5hr connection in SEA". I said that's fine, I rather have 5 than 1. Her response "done, check your email" and hung up on me!!! They can make the change without cost, they just don't want to.
My original flight left SFO late (I was tracking it). Would I have made my connection?? Who knows, it landed on a terminal/gate far from the flight to AMS. I'm happy I got the 5 hours.
Glad your situation turned out ok, Joy. It makes no sense why they make it so hard; if you had kept the original flights and missed your AMS connection, it would have been more work for them to rebook you then (and more hassle for you). Customer service in the airline industry is all but gone.
Our flight to Iceland 2 weeks ago had connection in Toronto. The flight was 2 hrs. late coming in because Air Canada did not have any pilots to fly the plane. Then there was a rain delay making our flight 4 hours late. We missed the flight to Iceland and therefore our cruise ship left without us. There was only 1 Air Canada employee in the entire airport and she was not helping anyone. We had to get on one of 15 telephones and listen to music for 3 hours to arrange for tickets back home. And then they said we needed to talk to United Airlines who processed the ticket originally. They came on the phone in 3 minutes. Air Canada who had our luggage in Toronto took 1 week to get our luggage to us. We were scheduled to fly home today from London. Scrap that vacation, flying on Air Canada and making connections in Toronto.
Oh, voorhies2024a, what a horrible situation! So sorry that happened to you!
voorhies2024a - that had to be a nightmare, I'm so sorry.
Oh, Voorhies, so sorry.
For our Nov/Dec London trip, I purposely chose the return flight through Salt Lake City (shorter layover) than Minneapolis. (Seattle going out after flight from our local airport.) Wouldn't you know it, they cancelled the SLC flight and put us on the Minneapolis with a 5.5 hour layover. It also has us leaving London about 1.5 hour earlier. Disappointing, but no catastrophe.
So I did. And the flight is now leaving 20 minutes earlier but arriving at the same time! I actually did get notice of this a couple days ago but missed it until I searched.
So thanks.
Wow- some of your stories are nightmares, so sorry! The change in aircraft is one I will now monitor via the seat map. On my last flight it was always showing the same seat I'd booked, but when I boarded it was in a different row than the seat map it showed? So yes, ended up in a much less desirable spot- lesson learned to pay attention as much as possible. Safe travels to all!
(Did you receive reimbursement for that cancelled cruise? I have started arriving a full day if not two before a scheduled tour, which is costly but try to make it a positive while there.)
I am embarrassingly obsessive about checking my reservations. Lucky I am. One day I was checking my flights to Greece. There was one leg on Canada Air. Well, it was suddenly gone. Neither airline contacted me (booked on one ticket). I had to cancel and rebook the entire trip!
Thanks for this reminder. We are leaving in a month to the Veneto/Slovenia and checked our flights and 4 of the 5 legs (that we had previously selected seats), were now not showing. So I re-selected, not too far off of what we had before.
