check bags or not

In order to use FF points we fly from Atl to Newark. From EWR we take a Continental flight to Paris and AF flight from Paris to Barcelona. We are considering taking one of our 21" bags as a carry on along with a couple smaller carry on bags. We always check our bags and so far they have arrived when we do. The one bag we check will have all those things that won't make it through security plus additional clothes. Does this plan make sense?

Hi Susan,

Personally, with all of those flight connections I'd pack light and take everything carry-on. That way you won't waste any precious travel time if one of your bags is lost! Bon Voyage!

As others will tell you - all carryon can be better - but yes if you have to check - youre doing it the right way - all the heavy stuff that can be delayed and not affect your trip in checked. The rest - carry on and/or wear (good jacket, hiking boots, goretex, camera, books, Rx meds, travel docs... etc).

But if you can try reducing the bags further if possible. Remember a small daypack/purse/breif case shouldnt count as a "carry on" but rather a personal item. Stick the heavy books/camera in that. Leave the large liquids at home.

Check Air France's website for carry-on. More and more I'm finding that you get ONE carry on NOT one carry AND a personal item (like a purse). Contact Air France to make sure that airport security will let you though with a carry on and a personal item at CDG. I've seen amazing fumble jumble before security at Heathrow with people practically wearing their underwear as a hat (just kidding sort of). Also be sure to put a "LOST LUGGAGE" sheet inside your checked bag (in a baggie). Give your cell # and itinerary. Twice my bag caught up with me utilizing this tactic. My handle grip has on it "ITINERARY INSIDE"

I carry on one bag. It's not just to make sure my bags get their with me or to save time at the airport. I also have flexibility if a plane is canceled and I have to jump to another flight. The best reason, however, is not lugging extra stuff around for the rest of my vacation.

Important to check the COntinenetal web site on their current carryon bag policy anad I meean ladies handbags too. Some airlines will only allow ONE item in the cabin and that inludes handbags. Also remember that the luggage weight allowance between Paris and Barcelaona is lower than the transAtlantic.
You could at Newark check your bags through to Barcelona. I did this once when I was flying Newark/London on Virgin and then London/Paris on AF.
No problem. It the luggage is checked straight through to your final destination, the tranas-Atlantic weight rules apply. Always check the web sites of the airlines for the current rules as these have been changing lately.
