Cheapest way to get from Strasbourg, Fr. to Frankfurt, Ger.

We are going to be in Strasbourg, France and are going to fly back to the US from Frankfurt, Ger. We are wondering if we can buy a regional train ticket to Frankfurt from the rail station in Strasbourg or if we would have to buy a separate ticket from Strasbourg to a border town (Kehl is the closest one) and then a regional ticket from Kehl. We would appreciate any advice.

You can buy a regional ticket online from the German Rail (Bahn) website. The cost would be €39,90. The trip will take 4½-5 hours. And you should be able to purchase regional tickets at the Strasbourg station. Also, from the Bahn website, you could purchase a Savings Fare ticket from Strasbourg to FRA (Frankfurt airport). You would need to make an advance purchase at least 3 days in advance, but the tickets go on sale 92 days in advance and the cheapest one will sell out so buy as soon as you can commit. Those tickets start at €39/p (at least for the date I checked) and the trip takes just over 2 hours. I think there is also a Lufthansa bus from Strasbourg to FRA. Update: Just looked up the Lufthansa bus. It take 2-3 hours for €49.

Debbie, A few points to add.... There are two rail stations at the Frankfurt Airport, so you can travel directly from Strasbourg to the airport without going through Frankfurt. The time is as short as 2H:19M with one change in Karlsruhe or Offenburg (the travel time will vary depending on which train you choose). The cost shown on the current schedules is €59 PP. Happy travels!

If you book far enough in advance (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site, you can get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare as low as €29.00 for Strasbourg to either the main Frankfurt station or the Frankfurt airport station.
