What is the best way for me to travel from Nice, France, to Assisi, Italy, and back? Is bus travel available as well as train? I have a full week, so time is not as tight as budget. I'd like daytime travel to see countryside.
Also any ideas about budget accommodations at Assisi? Monastery?

The train is probably your best choice. Getting from Nice to Assisi will require several connections. Your earliest departure time will be between 05:00 and 06:00. For timetables go to www.bahn.de and click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Nice-Assisi, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.
According to voyages-sncf.com, the fare for Nice-Ventimiglia is €6.40. According to trenitalia.com, the 2nd class fare for Ventimiglia-Assisi is €39.25.
