I and my two teens are backpacking through Europe on global rail passes and are currently in Paris and would like to travel to Ireland on May 5th. I have checked for cheap flights from Ryanair and Aer Lingus but they are too expensive for the day we want to travel. Can anyone tell me the best route from Paris through England to Dublin using trains and ferries? I am overwhelmed with all the station options.
Buy passholder fare tickets at any mainline SNCF station in Paris and take the Eurostar from Gare du Nord to St Pancras International in London. Your passes will not be good in the UK, but you can get cheap SailRail train + ferry tickets from London to Dublin. For more information, including a booking link, go here. Trains from London to Holyhead depart from Euston station which is quite close to St Pancras.
You've left it a bit late to organise that cheaply. The rail fares will probably be as expensive as flying. You could consider National Express coaches - London (Euston) to Holyhead will cost you about 28 pounds each. You can get a ferry from there to Ireland. Roger
Thanks to you both for your help! Yeah, we have been just rambling along through continental Europe without too much of a plan on this last leg, trying to stay spontaneous. It seems that this luxury might be a costly one! Lesson learned! Cheers!
