Hello, I am looking to book the cheapest train I can along with some friends to Bern for the weekend of October 30th. I do not fully understand how the SBB rail website works, so any tips on that site would be much appreciated. And also any price estimates would be helpful too. Does TrenItalia have a better deal?
According to the Swiss Rail site there is a advance/non-refundable fare for 70-80 euros one-way depending on which connection you take; 90 euros for the standard fare. But if you purchase from the Swiss Rail site you can only pick-up the tickets at a rail station in Switzerland or you have them the sent via DHL for $40USD extra. The Trenititalia web site doesn't accept US credit cards. But you shouldn't have any problems securing tickets once you arrive in Florence, there are several trains a day headed in the direction of Bern.
The Trenitalia site shows a standard 2nd class fare of €95.10, a Smart 2 fare of €65.10, and a Smart 1 fare of €55.10 for Firenze-Bern with one connection in Milano. If you buy your tickets as soon as you get to Italy, you might get lucky and find there are Smart fare tickets still available.
