Cheap Train Tickets out of Frankfurt?

Two of us are flying into Frankfurt to explore Bavaria and Austria by train for two weeks in May. Found the Bayern-Ticket for Bavaria and the Einfach-Raus-Ticket for Austria, both good for regional trains for groups 2 to 5. Is there a similar cheap group ticket out of Frankfurt? We were planning on going from Frankfurt airport to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Check www.rmv.de for fares from Frankfurt Flughafen (airport) to Aschaffenburg Hbf (station). It's from €6.75 one-way. Aschaffenburg already is the first city on Bavarian soil so the Bayern-Ticket is valid from there.

Technically, Kahl am Main is the first station in Bavaria, but since the RMV ticket from FRA to either Kahl or Aschaffenburg is €6,75, it doesn't really matter. From Kahl on you can use the Bayern-Ticket which is all all day (after 9 AM weekdays) pass for regional trains in Bavaria. It costs €19 for one person or €27 for 2-5 people. After buying the Bayern-Ticket (at an automat) and the ticket to Kahl at the Regionalbahnhof at FRA, board the S-Bahn or a regional train to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. From there, there are hourly regional trains (RE) via Kahl to Würzburg.

Thanks. If I got this right, there are two train stations in FRA: the Regionalbahnhof and the Fernbahnhof. And we should look for signs at FRA to lead us to the Regionalbahnhof at level 0. Once we get to the FRA Regionalbahnhof, we can go the the Automat for train tickets and buy two tickets: a group Bayern Ticket (27 euros) and two singles from FRA to Aschaffenburg Hbf (13.50 euros). And if we time it right, can we get on a regional train at FRA that would go straight through without any train changes to Wuerzburg? We will be so jet-lagged that if we can do that, we probably should just wait for the through train, since we will have to change trains twice before we get to Rothenburg ODT.

Not quite. The regional trains to Würzburg originate at the Hauptbahnhof in Frankfurt. You will need to take the S-bahn, or a regional train, to the Hauptbahnhof and catch a Regional Express from there.

It is also possible to go on the S-Bahn from FRA all the way to Hanau, and catch the RE from there to Würzburg, but that's a little more complicated.

It's probably also possible to catch an express train straight from FRA Fernbahnhof to Würzburg, but you can't use the low fares that way.

The Regionalbahnhof is under the building across the street from Terminal 1 at FRA. You get to it by going down stairs or escalators just inside the streetside wall of the great hall in Terminal 1. That takes you under the street to the ticket machines and to the escalators to the tracks.
