we are planning to go to Italy in early April. Checking fares we find that all one way are 1500-2000. However can find turkish airline to milan, venice or rome VIA istambul for under $600.00. aside from losing a day it seems too good to pass up...
what do you think?
Take Turkish Airlines - it's a no-brainer. You're looking for fares too early IMHO...but you can't beat $600 no matter when you look (it cost me a little below $600 to fly to Istanbul in 2011 and that's the cheapest I found for a direct flight). If they let you stopover in Istanbul for free (and you have the time and inclination), seriously consider it...it's a great city.
Ed, Do I understand that you're checking one-way fares? Are you not coming back to US? I found $1291 round trip into Venice out of Rome.
tks yr prompt replies ! just getting started so new to this.
Back Door Europe suggests flying in/out of different cities.
That airfare is great. I think you need to realize that you may have a very long layover but for that price I say go for it. I am also confused, are you looking at buying two one way tickets? That is the most expensive way to fly. Yes, through the back door book suggests flying into one city and home from another, say into Milan and home from Rome or something like that but you need to buy what is called an open jaw ticket, not two one way tickets. Hope this helps.
"Back Door Europe suggests flying in/out of different cities." To find affordable fares into one city and out of another, do NOT look for two one-way fares; these are indeed very expensive. Instead, use the "multi city" or "multiple destinations" feature of Kayak http://www.kayak.com/ or any airline's website. If you're still having difficulty, post another note.
Don't do one way tickets. Using www.kayak.com the MULTI CITY tab. If for example you want to fly from Houston to Milan and at the end of your visit you want to come back from Rome to Houston you would do as follows: First line of the multi-city tab: IAH to MXP (choose a date) Second line for your return trip
FCO to IAH I just checked for the last 2 weeks of Apr 2014 and prices are under $1,000 round trip (with Turkish) or about $1,200 with many other airlines.
