Charming town to break up journey from Munich (or Salzburg) to Brig?

My son’s family, with 6-year- old twins, will be traveling in Germany (plus Salzburg) for 8-9 days before meeting up with me in Switzerland in Bettmeralp, near Brig.

The train journey is too long to make in one day with the children, so they would like an intermediate stop along the way, probably in Germany. They would like a small gown or village with the “usual suspects”, like cobblestone streets, nice old buildings (maybe Fachwerk), and maybe something of interest to children that age.

Does Schaffhausen meet this description? St. Anton? Or other town?

Thanks for your help.

Schaffhausen is lovely. We wandered around there for an afternoon/evening while we were staying on the other side of the lake for 10 days. However, it's in Switzerland, which doubles the costs, it's got some pretty steep hills, and it's all paved city. The German side of the lake is equally beautiful, and they could stay right on the water. Lindau is gorgeous. The kids might enjoy the zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen, or the outdoor prehistoric village recreation in the lakebed at Unteruhldingen. Or a ferry ride out to Mainau for a good run around the garden island. None of those activities would take much over an hour and would give them some good outdoors time to blow off steam after a long train ride.

One other town we really liked was Überlingen. It is a very pretty old town with lots of the medieval wall and towers remaining. It also sits on the lakeside. My kids were teenagers already, but they enjoyed the playground, the walk along the lake and along the walls. We had one of our best meals of the trip there, but it was Swiss, and your family is heading into Switzerland, so they may not be interested. It is called Wirtshaus zum Gundele, located at Hafenstraße 15 in the Überlinger Altstadt.

As you speak German, you can help your son avoid confusion between Uhldingen/Oberuhldingen/Unteruhldingen/Überlingen and I'm sure I've forgotten some ;)

Nelly, thank you so much! I will have then take a look at Lindau and Überlingen. My son and his wife both speak better German than I do, as each of them did a 3-month Praktikum in their area of interest when they were students there.

They bought their flight tickets today and are very excited. Flying into Frankfurt, spending 9 days in Germany, then heading to Switzerland where I have apartments set up in Bettmeralp and Mürren. We were last together in Switzerland in 2017, so expecting some changes.

I need some suggestions for them for a village on the Mosel where they can ride bikes on the Mosel cycle path, so will be asking on the Germany forum for that.
