My husband and I will be touring Italy for a week and a half in July. We recently realized that on our return to the US from Florence, we have a layover in Frankfurt. We would love to delay our departure from Frankfurt for a day or two. I contacted the airline, and the fee is $500 to do so. Should we arrive at the Florence airport and try to change our Frankfurt departure then? Or even try to change the departure once we arrive in Frankfurt? I'm not sure if this will be more cost effective.

By waiting to make the change once you arrive in Europe, are you gambling that it might be cheaper or even free? I wouldn't count on it, by adding a stopover you typically have to pay a change fee, and the difference between the new fares. Doing this at the last minute could wind up costing you well over $500.

I don't think it will make any difference. Instead of having one flight with a change of plane, you now booking two different flights. For what you are trying to do, 500 may be cheap.
