I am looking for suggestions for a 1 week stay in provence. Will probably rent a car so in town location is not essential?

Provence is a large area and it depends on what you want to see while you're there. You might look at Isle sur la Sorgue, St Remy, or Carpentras, all are fairly central. If you are staying a week, renting a house is a good idea.
