Celtic Legend vs. Arnold Clark rental cars in the UK: price difference

When I was in Scotland last year, I rented a car for about 16 days through Celtic Legend, who works with Arnold Clark to provide rental cars. I was very happy with the experience and it was nice that I didn’t have to pay anything upfront until I picked up the car. The whole procedure went splendidly; so much so that this year, when I needed to rent a car for a portion of my trip in England, I turned to Celtic Legend again and reserved a car rental through Arnold Clark for £810. The car was a subcompact with a manual transmission, as the automatic was much pricer. Everything was confirmed, and I’ve just been waiting on my trip, which happens in mid March.

Today, however, I happened to go to the Arnold Clark website, because I was looking for information about their hours for returning my rental car. I noticed that an offer for a quote, so I thought I would just check it out and see what happened. Imagine my surprise when I was quoted a rate of £649 for an automatic transmission for the same exact period of time I had gotten before. The car is the same size. Everything is exactly the same except that the price is £160 cheaper and I have an automatic. Part of that cost was a £50 charge for the drop off fee, as I am returning it in a different city than where I picked it up.

I am posting this because I know there are a lot of people out there that love Celtic Legend, as do I. However, it may be worth it to go directly to the rental agency. It is also possible, of course, that the period of time contributed to the rate change, so it may not be entirely Arnold Clark’s doing, but it's still worth checking out.

The only real difference is that I had to pay for it upfront, but for an extra £5, I was able to get a cancellation clause in it.

I think the only other difference is that Celtic Legend gives you a free sat nav device and Arnold Clark charges a fee for that (not much, though). Since I use Google maps for GPS, however, I have no need of one.

Since I have already booked a car through Celtic Legend for September, I checked directly with Arnold Clark. The same car was £132 more through Arnold Clark but I think the difference is that CL didn’t charge for extra drivers and AC charges £180 for an extra driver. And we need 2 drivers. Good to check both.

Mardee , I made my reservation with Celtic Legend about a year ago for this past Autumn, and checked directly with Arnold Clark as well . I had the same experience that Alex reports , and as I recall , the arrangement with Celtic Legend also included CDW insurance , windscreen and tires . The only additional charge was a zero excess ( deductible ) which was about two hundred pounds ( one month rental . ) I was way ahead with Celtic Legend . Total charge was about 1,300 quid

I guess it just depends. I'm waiving the CDW and don't have an extra driver. But either way, I do think it pays to check. 😊

How about the customer service, has it been as good dealing directly with Arnold Clark? While part of my original motivation with Celtic Legend was price, it was the outstanding customer service while booking the car and patiently answering questions that has me willingly recommending them to all that will listen.

*for the record, picking up my car from Arnold Clark in Edinburgh was good, dropping it off in Glasgow was outstanding. However I'm not sure if it was good customer service or just the fact that I have yet to meet a grumpy Scot.

I think that was part of it, Allan. Arnold Clark had exceptional customer service. When I picked up my car outside Glasgow, the woman explained everything very thoroughly and then when I asked about upgrading to an automatic, she said that she had one and would not charge me extra for it. And when I dropped it off outside Edinburgh, I had the same great customer service. They told me the car was fine with no problems (even though it was a dusty dirty mess) and that was it. I was very pleased with their service, so that's why i decided to cancel the CL booking and go ahead with AC.

I'll let you know how it goes!

I booked via Celtic Legend , but the curbside pickup and drop-off ( Manchester and Sighthill , Edinburgh ) were terrific . Great ,courteous customer service ! On pickup , they also upgraded the car , which was unexpected , and turned out to be a plus , due to the size of the boot .

Completely not related to these two agencies, but I have a car for 2 weeks in Ireland in May/June. Booked months ago through Auto Europe. I kind of by accident checked prices at Rentalcars.com and imagine my surprise when it was about $400 cheaper. So I booked and was going to cancel AutoEurope. So a week later, when I started to cancel, I checked prices again out of curiosity - and saved an extra $100 over fhe other agency price.

I know others have suggested re-checking - I tried that for my rental last July and it always stayed the same. But with a savings of $500, it sure pays to keep checking.

TexasTravelmom, you just saved me another chunk of change, lol! I forgot about AutoEurope.

I'm also renting a car for a week in Cornwall, and had booked one with Europcar for $428.00 back in October. However, I saw your post and thought I would check with AutoEurope again. This time I found an automatic for $229 (ironically also using Europcar). So I booked that and cancelled the first one. With both savings, I'm now $400 better off.
