Cell Phone Use During Flight/Ryanair?

What do we think of Passengers being able to use their cell phone while in Flight?

If you could would you? Will it be just another annoyance having to listen to your seatmate yacking next to you?

I briefly heard on BBC today that Ryanair plans to allow Pax to use their own Cell phones once the Aircraft has reached 10,000ft and above.

As many of us know, the use of cell phones is strictly forbidden during flight. So far, it looks like Ryanair is the only Carrier with such plans.

What do we think? Good idea or bad idea?

Terrible idea! Who needs to hear your seat mate or the person down the aisle talking about their business deal, love life or whatever. And, as we all know, people usually talk louder when on a cell phone, I guess they figure the person on the other end will hear better.

Being forced to listen to someone, sitting 6 inches from your ear, yak on their cell phone, with no way to escape, all of this possible at any time during the duration of a flight--now what could go wrong there? This is possibly the most lame-brained ideas an airline has ever come up with to make money. Hopefully passengers will punish the offending airline by choosing not to pay to undergo this form of torture. If they're looking for trouble, they may get it. Will complicate the FA job, refereeing disputes between passengers. We can only hope it's never allowed over the pond or within the US.

Flight Attendant,

I can't imagine anything more annoying or irritating! Whatever happened to the "interference with aircraft electrical systems"? I certainly hope RyanAir scraps this idea, as other airlines will have to follow suit to remain competitive. There will be NO escape!

Cheers!

It's the last bastion of cel-free freedom! Even movie theatres aren't safe any more. :(

Knowing Ryanair, they will probably charge a 20 euro fee for the right to use your phone airborne:)

Oh heavens! I can't think of anything worse...

I once spent an hour sitting next to a woman on a train who spent the whole time ringing everyone she knew and loudly telling them she was on a train. Can you imagine a whole flight full of, "Hello! I'm on a plane! No, a PLANE!".

I wouldn't use my phone on a flight unless the plane was about to crash. I like my phone, but I don't feel the need to constantly talk to everyone I know every minute of the day.

The first person to invent ear plugs that cut out all noise deserves a Nobel Prize in my opinion.

Michael: Maybe RyanAir will charge passengers an extra 20Euro to sit in a "cellphone free" zone...kind of like the way airlines used to have the smoke-free section of the cabin. ha

Having to listen to people on cell phones wouldn't be so bad if only their conversations weren't so BORING ! On the city buses here these calls always seem to go like this : "Yeah, well, I'm on the 24 bus now and we just passed Guy Street. What? I said I'm on the 24 bus now ...." and so on. And these conversations take place in English & French, sometimes in the same call.

I think there is an article about this on the BBC website if anyone wants to Google it.

I hope it doesn't become an Industry Standard. For years we've had to enforce the no cell phone use in flight...and now it's ok?

I guess at 10,000ft or above, the so called "critical phase of flight" is past and the Safety briefing completed but...I still don't like it...
I mean, in an Emergency, now we'll have to ensure that all Cell phones are off so Pax can hear and follow the direction of the Crew. Not that we're lazy, ok some if not most of us are, but I'm concerned about safety. I know how challenging it can be at times to compete with a newspaper during Safety Announcements...Will the cell phone be next?

And who wants to listen to a cell phone ringer when you're trying to rest? You know how it is, there's always someone who won't lower the volume or set it to vibrate. You know how it always happens in the waiting room at the Doc's Office...

I can't say for sure, but I think the cost was something like one pound per minute or 40p per text and free to receive text?? Maybe someone would be kind enough to look into it further and report back?

Does anyone know when this new "Rule Break" comes into effect?

It's definitely a good reason to NOT fly RyanAir.

I read about this a few months ago. Can you imagine 100 people on the plane all talking on their cell phone at once, the streeches of laughter, yelling or the constant chatter for the entire flight. I will have on ripping headache before landing. I hope they don't do this! What if the person sitting near you starts having inappropriate conversation, adult content or swearing, I would be PO if done in front of my children or any children. I think they are looking for trouble.

It's definitely time to invest in the companies that manufacture ear plugs! I find that I'm using them more and more. I recently realized that they are the solution when I draw the hide-a-bed at my parents. It's right next to the kitchen and mom is an early riser. Nothing like clanking silverware first thing in the AM. ; ) Pam

I cant even stand it when some nobhead is talking on one next to me in line at the supermarket. I dont even see the need for cell phones unless you are calling for directions or ingredients you need to pick up at the store, or if your car breaks down in nothing land.

I agree with Kent. Its bad enough when you are near someone where you have the ability to escape but on a plane with the person sitting right next to you.Forget it.

Seems like this isn't going to go over all too well. I'm kind of hoping it stays a Ryanair thing and doesn't "spread it's wings" to the other birds in the sky.

I can just imagine having to settle more than a few passenger disputes! Oh what fun that would be. I hate when that happens...

Unfortunately, I've never know Ryanair to be terribly concerned with passenger comfort. Therefore I do expect them to implement this policy:)
