Carry-On RyanAir

Hello,

I'm travelling to Europe and attempting to carry-on my bag. Although I'm flying several diffferent airlines within Europe (Aer Lingus, Ryan Air, and easyJet), Ryan Air has the most stringent carry-on policy. Does anyone know how strict they are about this? The bag I'm thinking about purchasing is Rick Steves convertable carry-on, but it says that it has dimensions of 9 x 21 x 14 inches, which is just over RyanAir's maximum of 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 inches. Thoughts and suggestions?

If you don't think this would work, what carry-on bag would you suggest I purchase?

I think your bigger problem will be Aer Lingus which only allows 6 KG which is 13.2 lbs.

They are quite strict. They derive a good deal of income from oversize luggage so you can bet that they check. Any bag with roller wheels usually won't make it.

Alex
I took Ryan air 2 times last week and they didn't really measure your bag unless it looked unusually large or heavy. They did reject one girl's but her bag looked more like a marshmellow, than a suitcase.

They also allow one bag per person. ONE.
If you have a camera bag, it better be shoved inside the regular bag.

If your bag is 21.6 inches, it will work on Ryan air. I saw bags which looked pretty big (still carry on diameter) and they allowed it on.

Alex,

If you're using the RS Convertible Carry On, it may get past RyanAir check-in if it's not packed too full (or is too heavy). They will probably judge it visually at first, and decide from there whether they need to put it through a sizing frame or weigh it.

I try to avoid RyanAir whenever possible because of their restrictive policies (which seem to be worse than some of their competitors - their proposal to start charging €1 to use the WC on the plane was "the last straw").

Cheers!

Me and my family (4 of us) flew on RyanAir last year and we each had a 22in roller bag and had no problems. We had preprinted boarding passes and never spoke with an agent until they took our ticket to board. They glanced at our luggage but did not attempt to measure them. I think they visually size them up.

Frank, I was petrified on flying Aer Lingus, but in/out of San Francisco, they just looked at my pack and let me through.

I think it depends on the departure city, and the crew.

Since Aer Lingus is competing with other long haul carriers out of SFO, they are probably more lenient on that route. However, in Europe, where they compete with the discounters, they can be tougher.

Alex, I live in Europe and have traveled extensively on Ryanair. What I can tell you about their carry-on rules is that it's interpreted differently at different airports, and even at the same airport. At Frankfurt Hahn I've had to shove my backpack into one of those "will your bag fit" contraptions, while I saw others (probably German) who had HUGE bags. Pisa, Italy doesn't seem to care at all. London does. My suggestion is, if you buy the RS bag that's officially too big, just spring the money to check it, cuz if they make you check it at the last minute you'll pay more. OR-get a smaller bag, or if the RS convertible carry on is soft sided, just make sure it's not full all the way. Good Luck!!

PS-I've seen lots of wheeled bags get on, but once a friend was made to check at the stairs cuz she was wheeling it, while others who were carrying their wheeled bags (and bigger bags) got on. It's the luck of the draw with Ryanair!
