Carry on bag on Easyjet - Bag size checked HORIZONTALLY

Hi,

I flew today with EasyJet from Seville to Geneva. I brought a small two wheels suitcase with me as carry-on luggage, but they charged me 48 euro when I was about to get into the plane.

What shocked me is that they put my suitcase HORIZONTALLY in the size check in order to verify if it fitted. The size allowed by EasyJet for carry-on bags is 45 x 36 x 20 cm and my small suitcase complied with this 45 x 36 x 20 cm but of course, if you put the bag HORIZONTALLY in the size check, then it cannot comply with the 36 cm requirement. Do you think that I have a point if I issue a complaint on this matter? If yes, what is your experience on complaints on this matter with EasyJet?

Thanks,

A

It is not clear what you mean by “horizontally”. Bag sizers I have seen are boxes that measure the height ( the 45cm figure) and depth ( the 20 cm dimension) with firm walls. An oversized bag in either of these dimensions will not fit into the box. The width ( the 35 cm dimension) is measured either by having the walls of the box exactly that high (so any extension above the wall is excessive) or, if the walls of the box are lower they need a tape to make the quick measurement.

I don’t see how a bag can be put into the sizer any other way than this. Do you mean they tried to lay it flat instead of on edge? In that case of course it would not fit, and they were wrong to charge you.

Do you mean that they included the wheels? Because yes, they do, and that is made clear on the website.

If you try to take a wheeled case as included cabin luggage they ALWAYS check it and despite the size being reduced a while ago there are always several people on each flight being charged. If you have a soft bag they never seem to check the size.

They were having problems before because all the wheeled cases couldn’t physically fit in the plane cabin so some would be end up being checked at the gate.

I am trying to understand what happened. Typically I am the one who puts the suitcase in the sizer and I did that when I flew EasyJet pre-pandemic. Could you have picked it up and put it in correctly as it sounds like the whole thing would have fit.

I put the suitcase up but they said that that was not correct and they put it horizontally.

The EasyJet sizer is always horizontal, ie a wheeled case will have the wheels facing out to the side rather than down when placed in the sizer.

EasyJet have reduced the size of the included cabin bag since covid. The bag is now meant to fit under the seat in front of you. You can pay extra (£35 each way on a recent flight) to take the old, larger size bag as cabin luggage.

I am flying Easyjet in June from London Gatwick to Santorini. I just added "hold" luggage to my ticket. I was afraid if I didn't I would also be paying at the gate. If it makes you feel any better even booking Hold luggage before departure I was charged $53 each way to check luggage. Discount airline travel has certainly got a lot more costly this year.

My bag has gone with me for free on most of my EasyJet flights. It's a 21" swivel wheeled carry on bag that measures 22" with the wheels.

But if they catch me, they catch me. I'll not complain because I'm already ahead of their game with some ridiculously low airfares.

I felt the same way for Norwegian Air Shuttle when I was singled out on a flight to check my bag. I got on the plane and 3/4 of those already on the plane had bags just like mine. It's called revenue maximization.
