We are going to be in Munich the end of July 1st week of August and we are planning then to travel from Munich to Murren for a couple of days and then onto Paris for a couple of days before returning to USA. Has anyone traveled by car? it that worth doing? Ron Miller
I'd bet you can find public transportation from Munich to Murren. Murren to Paris is a long slog. You don't have much time, so driving would really eat it up. You can't drive in Murren; you probably wouldn' enjoy driving in Paris - - or be able to find a parking place that wouldn't get in your wallet. The second-country drop-off fee will eat you alive. I avoid public transportation and drive almost everywhere. Drop the car idea.
OK, so driving from Munich to Murren and then to Paris is out! What does anyone recommend? Again we are going from Munich to Murren and then onto Paris. Thanks everyone Ron
Easy train trip from Munich to Muerren. Use the Bahn link in the sticky at the top under FAQs and look at your choices. Use the Bahn website as far as "Interlaken Ost" from where you can use the train to Lauterbrunnen and then the cable car and train up the mountain to Muerren, just like it says in Rick Steves' Switzerland books. Look at a recent one because there used to be a funicular which has been replaced by the cable car. The price varies a little depending on the route, from around €118 to €140 or so for the Munich Interlaken bit. You can change in Karlsruhe or Zurich and/or Bern, or even use the ferry across the Bodensee (Lake Constance).
Ron, As the others have mentioned, that would NOT be a good time to be driving, especially that distance. Travel by train will be MUCH faster, more efficient and a better use of your travel time. There are also the issues of huge dropp-off fees, high fuel costs, tolls, parking, expensive CDW and of course the Tax Vignette that you'd have to obtain in Switzerland to avoid fines. For the trip from Munich to Mürren, the shortest trip I could find was 6H:40M, with two changes in Zurich and Bern (reservations compulsory on two legs). Your destination will be Interlaken Ost, where you'll transfer to the local Berner Oberland train to Lauterbrunnen. When you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, there are two different routes to Mürren. If you need further information, post another note. For the trip from Mürren to Paris, you'll have to get back to Interlaken Ost and depart from there. You'll likely connect with the TGV in Basel, and from there to Paris will be via TGV which travels at 300 kMH. There's NO WAY you'd be able to match that in a car. You'll arrive at Paris Lyon (there are about six rail stations in Paris) and can then use the Metro to reach the area where your Hotel is located. You might find it helpful to stop at the EurAide office in the Munich Hbf. Their English-speaking staff will be able to help you sort out the rail options. Happy travels!
No question - take the train. I've done the Munich to Mürren train trip with a stop in Füssen to see the castles...really an enjoyable trip. Enjoy Mürren and the surrounding stunning Alps for a LONG time - it's definitely worth it. The TGV to Paris is a nice smooth and quick ride dropping you right in Gare de Lyon. You don't need a car for ANY part of this trip. It would just be your personal boat anchor around your neck for the entire time.
