Car Services in Eastern European Cities

My wife and I will be traveling to several major cities in Eastern European countries and was curious if anyone has used services such as Uber or Lyft to travel around within cities and what your experiences have been. Thanks!

We spend a lot of time in "Eastern" Europe and it isn't a homogenous zone. What might be a good idea in Hungary might not be a good idea in Kyiv. Where are you going?

Thanks for responding. We'll be in Prague, Warsaw, Kraków, Budapest and Vienna.

Prague, Warsaw, Kraków, Budapest and Vienna

I haven't been in Warsaw or Krakow, and while I am pretty certain of the answer I will leave that to someone else.

I would be "comfortable" using Uber in Prague, Budapest and Vienna. These are all modern CENTRAL European cities with very low crime rates and some really wonderful people. But I might suggest that if your need is to get around within the cities; you don't need a car service. The tourist zones in Prague are so compact and well linked by public transit that there is just no need to use a service as part of sightseeing. The tourist zones in Vienna are only marginally larger and again well connected by public transit. In both Vienna and Prague a very large majority of the tourist zones are pedestrian only. The sights in Budapest are scattered over a fairly large area making a very large central part of the city "THE" destination. But again, for a few dollars a day you can get a metro card that will allow you unlimited use of the metro system and riding the trams and walking the streets is a lot of the charm of the city.

As for the occasional long haul trips or maybe that late evening show or dinner, conventional taxis are so inexpensive (especially in Budapest) that the decision to use Uber has to be based on more than just cost.

Hope that was some help.

And the same is true for Kraków. It's all very compact and if you would be in need of motorised transport, taxis are cheap.

Thanks to all for the input. Good to know getting around in these cities should be easy. Our favorite form of transportation is our feet although at night taxi's or trams should do us well.

The Budapest trams are great sightseeing excursion vehicles. Cheap and with great views. Between foot and tram, if you pick the right location to stay in town, there isn't anything you cant reach in under 20 minutes by either walking alone or walking with a short tram ride. With maybe the exception of Hero's Square and the City Park; but even that is a trip on what is a sort of fun and historic metro line.

You are going to want a Budapest TravelCard. They come in three flavors, 24 hour, 72 hour and 7 day. http://www.bkk.hu/en/budapest-72-hour-travel-card/ not to be confused with the Budapest Card. The 24 hour is 1650HUF which is about $6, the 72 hour is 4150HUF or about $5 a day and the 7 day card is 4950 or about $2.50 a day. The TravelCard allows you to ride all the metros, trams and busses to your hearts content. No extra charge and no need to validate tickets. Individual tickets are about $1.25. Typically count on using no less than 2 a day and once you get comfortable with the trams you can easily go through 4 tickets a day. http://l7.alamy.com/zooms/43ae5ec35c9a47dfbf353c7100987131/yellow-tram-on-the-liberty-bridge-szabadsag-hid-over-the-river-danube-by5ebj.jpg
