If dropping a car in Italy, the drop fee will make is very expensive. Probably cheaper to take a car to the border, walk across, and get another car on the Italy side.

Janis, I agree with the previous reply that it would be better to rent another car in Italy, to avoid the expensive drop fee. It WON'T be "reasonably priced"! Are you aware of the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy (ie: IDP's, ZTL areas). If not, post another note for further information. Happy travels!

Thanks, Vernon and Frank. We've rented cars in Italy before and know about the issues. It also seems that walking across the border isn't practical, and we can't find a car rental agency in or near Ventigmilia, which is the border stop for the train from Nice. Train from Nice (where we could drop our car) to Lucca involves too many stops, so we are still looking for other (easy and not too costly) options.

A lot of users of this forum use autoeurope.com for their overseas rentals. They are well-established and reliable. A one-way dropoff fee is unavoidable if you pick the car up in one country and drop it off in another. Expect the fee to be as much as 200-500 euros. The larger the city in which you drop off the car, the lower the drop-off fee (usually). If that's more than you want to pay, you'll have to look at public transportation alternatives.

Going the other way, we were able to drop our car in San Remo and take a train to Nice. The rental was through Autoeurope.

You haven't mentioned where in Italy, if flight reservations have been made, or if you're time-limited. What this idiot does is take the car back to the country if which he got it. For example, Rome to Nice is six hours on freeways. With a small car that's about a hundred bucks in gas and my gut shot is seventy-five bucks for tolls (but that's trying to hook segments together in my mind - - I've never made that exact run). Leave at daylight and you're done with the car by noon if you consolidate all your other business into the one gas stop.

Thanks for all the great ideas! We've just booked a reasonably priced 1-way rental from Paris to Florence through AutoEurope - got help from a very friendly, very knowledgeable, very patient phone rep (he even knows what an arrondissement is, which was not the case with the people at Hertz and Avis). So I think we're set.
