Car rental vs Train back to Munich Airport

2 Couples will be ending our vacation in Bled Slovenia and wonder if it would be best to take a train and leave our rental in Ljubljana or turn in our car in Munich which we will have rented in Rome or Croatia. I now it sounds complicated but, we fly into Rome and out of Munich. Thanks, Eva

Renting a car in one country as I gather you are planning and returning to another country for drop off is expensive, very expensive, you need to check it out.

There is a direct EC from Lesce Bled (9:52) to Munich Hbf (15:33). With advance purchase (92 days), you can book it online from the German Rail (Bahn) websitefor 39€/P. For the same price, you can book it all the way to the Munich airport just by specifying "To: Muenchen Flughafen Terminal" when booking. That ticket will be train specific for the EC on that date, but will allow you to take any S-Bahn that day to the airport after you arrival at the Munich Hbf. If your flight out is the next day, use Freising as the To: and stay in Freising for the night. There is a bus from Freising Bahnhof in the morning - several 20 min trips/hr. Price is about 2,50€/P.

I want to thank all of the travelers that have replied to my msg. In studying it further and with some input. We probably will rent a car just for Italy take the ferry to Dubrovnik rent a car there and leave it in Ljubljana and take a train to Munich which I think they have 1 a day leaves at 11am arrive in Munich around 4pm. I have talked with 1 rental co. in Slovenia and they think there is a car co. in Croatia that will allow us to leave it in Slovenia. They say it is too early to do anything for next Fall. Anymore suggestion I would welcome. Thanks Again.
Can't believe the cost of gas!!!!!

You'll find returning a rental car very expensive if you travel out of country. When we were in Italy in April, dropping the car in another Italian city was without cost. But fuel was $9.51 per gallon. Many travel from city to city by train, and then rental cars to do day trips. From Italy to Croatia, I assume you'll be taking the ferry? You might want to take the ferry back to Italy and take a train up to Munich. The Alps make driving from Croatia to Munich just about prohibitive. And many car rental companies are tough on where they allow their cars to go.
