It is ridiculous is what it is. I just rented a car about 25 miles from my home for 450. The same car at the closer place (same car same rental co. Same county same taxes and everything). Was 1100.
It's common knowledge that car rental prices have increased, and considerably in some cases. This does not excuse poor research by the 'travel writer'.
"A week's car rental from Bologna airport -- typically one of the entry points to explore the neighboring region of Tuscany -- costs a whopping $1,800 with Italian chain Locauto." - I can find a similar rental for less than half of that. The same with Florence for three days.
