Car Rental Swap - England to France via Ferry or Chunnel

A few years ago we used Hertz "Le Swap" program to switch our car from right hand drive to left hand drive after going through the channel tunnel. The program is no longer available! We are two adults and four children, so any train or plane we would take from London to Paris (our final destination) is around 600-800 US dollars round trip. I've spoken with Avis and Alamo and both have fees (around 200 US dollars) taking our London based rental car over to the continent, even though we are driving it back to the UK. My husband would really like to drive a left hand car while in France. We don't want all of these extra fees either. Plus, six passengers on a Seafrance or P&O Ferry cost 129 pounds and if we took our car it would only be 70 pounds for all of us. Has anyone else been in this quandary? Any suggestions please! I really want to get to Paris!

Mary Ann,

What dates are you traveling? Not knowing the ages of your children, I entered four adults and two children for some arbitrary dates in June and found a total return fare of £264.

It may not appeal to you for either travel time or comfort, but you can take a Eurolines coach for a lot less money, especially if you book well in advance. If you want to save the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing, you can ride the coach overnight. See www.eurolines.co.uk.

Thanks for the reply Tim. I checked it out and for our dates in June, for all six of us to go roundtrip London to Paris on Eurolines it's 356 pounds...OUCH!

I was departing from London Heathrow central bus station. We need to drop our car off at Heathrow. I think from Victoria station it's cheaper.
