We are going to rent a car to drive from Perugia to berner oberland area. Map quest says roughly 7 hours.... anyone done this? Will it kill us? How many more hours than 7 does it really take? We are pretty used to driving in US - family of 5 with sons 20 and daughter 15. Also, thinking of driving (after 2 full days and 3 nights) to Nice. We would get up early Saturday morning and make stops some key spots (would love to see chomonix/mont blanc) - may spent the night some where close to Nice but want to be in Nice early am Sunday. Have thought about returning car IN italy somewhere like Aostia, Turin, some town in route (looks like it saves lots of money to return in same country!) and train the rest of the way to Nice. Any advice welcome - THANKS! Mel
I'm betting it's more like eight or nine hours, plus what you need for stops. The bumnmer is that it's freeways at first, so you'll be hypnotized - - then at the end, when you're beat, you've got the twisty, two-lane mountain roads. Grindelwald to Nice via Chamonix is another seventeen hours or so. Going the fast way (via Milan) cuts a couple of hours. Get rid of the car on the Italian side to save money. I'd make it as close to the border as possible since the drive along the coast is pretty interesting.
