Car rental Salzburg

Hi,
I will be traveling to Salzburg in September, I had intended on using public transportation to go to Mauthausen and Berchtesgaden but the area looks so beautiful that it has me second guessing this. How easy is it to rent a car in Austria? Can I pick up the car at the train station? I looked at Auto Europe and I think they gave me a good quote are they easy to work with any problems?

Tell me if you think this will work? We are staying outside of Salzburg so having a car won't be a problem. We plan on spending a full day in Salzburg the day after we arrive via train then pick up the car at the end of our day. Then we would have the car for 2 full days to explore.

Thanks for your help,
Wendy

Renting a car is a great idea for this area of Austria. It will make your visit to Mauthausen easier in that you would have to take a taxi from the train station to the entrance--unless you want to walk up the hill. We use AutoEurope for all of our trips. Picking the car up at the train station would probably be easiest. Have fun on your trip!

We rented through Auto Europe a few years ago and picked up the car in Salzburg. The rental company that we got the car from (Europcar) was an easy walk from the station. Actually, up the platform and take a foot bridge across the tracks. We drove to Berchtesgaden and to Hallstatt. We have used Auto Europe several times (twice in 2009) and have always been satisfied. So yes, this will work! Have a good trip.

We had a very good experience with autoeurope. We worked with informed, friendly people...not always that common anymore.
