Car rental rates in France, and Germany

Hi. For budgeting purposes, what could I expect to pay daily for a rental car? Are the rates by the day, by mileage? Thanks for any info!

The cost varies by size of car, length of rental, country and company. You can go online to www.autoeurope to test rates.

Douglas, the best rates for renting a car are in Germany. You don't mention for how long you are planning on renting and the price can be based on how long you rent the car. It will be with unlimited mileage. I rented a car for 21 days and it was actually cheaper than had I rented it for 20 days. In fact, I turned the car in a day early and was told I owed more money because my contract was for 21 days. The gentleman behind the counter was able to do some paper work adjustment so I did not have to pay the extra. Keep in mind that if you rent in one country and drop the car in another you will incur a huge drop off penalty so avoid that if at all possible. I always rent through a broker, gemut.com. Great rates and service. Check them out and copare rates with others. Good luck.

Last Oct I toured the Romantic Road. I got a quote for a seven day compact car rental at $270 for the seven days, picked up at the Munich Hbf and returned in Würzburg. So that was about $40/day (when the Euro was $1.43). I was going to drive from Munich to Oberammergau, then up the RR to Rothenburg and on to Würzburg. ViaMichelin's fuel cost estimate was another $80, for $350 total, $50/day.

I ended up doing the trip with public transportation (trains and buses) for €93 ($132 at the time).
