We will be in Nice, France for six or seven days and would like to rent a car for at least a couple of those days. I'd like to wait to rent until we are there and can plan our days. However, is it more expensive to rent "on the spot" rather than from the US? Are there other costs we might encounter by renting in France?
Yes, the advice given by Rick Steves in his books is that it is more expensive to rent "on the spot" in Europe. He says the best rates are to be had by booking car rental online from the US in advance. I believe the savings can be substantial. This is what I've always done, I've never rented "on the spot" in Europe so I don't know. I have been told by European rental car company employees that the rates I got by making arrangements in the US were low compared to what is available renting on the spot. You can make a guess as to dates, reserve from here online; once you're there, if your dates change slightly, I am guessing you could get on the internet from Nice, use your confirmation # to access your car rental, and change the dates.
